Day 10: Use and value the diversity of plants, people and wildlife to create abundance

Day 10 was a day of study and hard work by the teams as they worked on their design ideas.
We were all working on the same task, to design forest garden for Busoga High school in the area we had surveyed last week.

It is a hard task to manage these design projects, especially with 25 participants. To give each participant a chance to take an active role at an appropriate level and to come up with a coherent design, all with in a tight time schedule is extremely difficult.

We broke down the design task as follows:

Group 1: Led by Sector39 team member Richard: Overview of land, base mapping measurements, A framing and surveying for swales and hard landscaping.

Group 2: Led by S39 member Grace, details of the plantings, to create guilds and functional relationships. We had selected 60 or so trees and shrubs together with some herbs from a nursery in Jinja as well as three bags of peas, goundnuts and beans geen manures as well as  watermelon and squash. We aslo had Moringa seeds to add as well.

Group 3: Led by project volunteer Dan. He brought 2 elements to the design, having built a Estufa Finca, wood pyrolysis stove and was aslo desgining wood fuel coppice element to the system. This was suprisingly unfamiliar to the Africa participants who dont coppice at all.

Group 4: Led by Permaculture Research Institute of Uganda (PRI-UG) member Charles had the responsibility of integrating the output of the various design teams in to a coherant whole. This involved much comunicatd between both the client and the design teams.

Group 5: Led by S39 Volunteer Amy was to capture the output of the design process and relay it back to the school and students to give them an understanding of the components and functions of the design.
